How to build a SMART learning routine?

Learning how to code is easier than you think if you have the right routine.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase:

Consistency is the key.

But nobody explains how to become consistent, so let me show you how I've built a routine that helped me to learn the Frontend Tech Stack in just 5 months while working full-time as a barista!

Step #1: Set SMART Deadlines

The word "SMART" in the heading above is there on purpose.

Because most people who learn how to code set stupid deadlines 🙈.

And it's not their fault, they just don't have enough information to do it properly, so let me give you that information ✅.

Here is how most people think:

In 6 months I want to be a developer in a great company.

It's a great goal, but the deadline itself is very stupid 🙈.

The reason why it's stupid is that it doesn't force you to do the EXACT ACTION right now, and you end up procrastinating for 5 months, then you realize that 1 month isn't enough to get the job, and you lose motivation and fail!

So here is an example of the exact deadlines that helped me to learn Frontend in 5 months:

  • In 2 weeks I will cover all HTML tags on w3schools.
  • In 3 days I'll build this simple HTML website
  • In 30 days I'll cover all JavaScript basics.
  • In 7 days, I'll build this React movies app.
  • etc...

These deadlines were challenging but realistic.

And what is most important they forced me to take action NOW!

Step #2: Create SMART Routine

Since you now have smart deadlines, it's time to create a smart routine.

And it's actually quite simple. Hard to stick to it, but simple to build.

You just need to block a time block of 2-6 hours (depending on your availability) in your calendar for 5-6 days a week.

AND YOU NEED TO STICK TO IT.

You can also add some nice rituals to that routine, to make it more pleasant.

Example of routine:

  • Every morning you go to the coffee shop and grab a cup of coffee ☕️.
  • Open your notes with smart deadlines and check what is your next deadline.
  • You start working on tasks to make sure that you hit this deadline.
  • You set your phone in Airplane mode and fully ignore everyone until you complete your 2-6 hours deep work time block (if you are getting super tired, you can introduce a couple of 15-minute breaks).

I do the same thing with my newsletter.

I absolutely love writing it, but sometimes I just don't feel like doing it.

That's why every Tuesday I go to a coffee shop, and sit there for a couple of hours writing it 🧑‍💻.

Now it's my Tuesday routine, and I do it regardless of circumstances.

Step #3: Be Smart About Your Health

A strong mentality is what will truly help you not to burn out, not to be sorry for yourself and not to give up.

I will not be talking about things like meditations here ❌.

A lot of people talk about it, and maybe it's a good thing.

But personally, I haven't yet introduced it into my life, so I can't say if it's useful or not.

But what definitely helped me to stay strong IS SPORT 💪.

I truly believe that most of the psychological difficulties you experience in your life can be solved if you just keep your health in good condition.

And the only way to do it is to eat healthy, drink vitamins and DO SPORT.

So if you want not to burnout and throw away the routine you've created in a previous step do the following things:

  • Do a big blood test and consult with the doctor about it. It's very likely that something won't be okay about it and you'll have to start drinking a couple of vitamins to get your health to 100%.
  • Start doing sports activities at least 2-3 times a week.
  • Try to stick to at least a 30/70 ratio in terms of bad food/good food

That will make you so much healthier, happier, and help you to become a more successful human individual overall.

Conclusion

If you really want to successfully learn how to code, you need to start with setting Smart Deadlines, then build a Smart Routine across those deadlines and finally take care of your Health.

SO STOP DELAYING and waiting for the good moment. START NOW!
